Surviving and Thriving at Frost Burn WV: A Winter Burner’s Guide to Warm, Cozy Fun

Everything you need to know about Frost Burn — from weather and logistics to fashion and comfort essentials for frost-bitten adventures.

Deep in the mountains of West Virginia, Frost Burn brings the Burner ethos to the heart of winter. Imagine the creativity of a Burner event colliding with the icy thrill of a snowy landscape — fire spinning against frosty skies and community warming by shared heat and art.
As the temperatures plunge (sometimes near or below freezing), the key to truly enjoying Frost Burn is staying toasty, functional, and fabulously styled. Let’s break down everything you need to know to make this unforgettable — and comfortable — experience.
What Is Frost Burn, Anyway?
Each winter, the Frost Burn returns to Marvin’s Mountaintop in Masontown, WV—close enough to Morgantown for easy travel, yet far enough to feel like its own world.
Frostburn 2026 will again unfold over Presidents’ Day weekend, inviting us back into the cold for another year of magic. This regional burn channels the creative energy of Burning Man, swapping desert dust for snow and ice. Music, firelight, art, food, movement, and community all come together to turn winter into a playground.

Frost Burn is a winter regional event inspired by Burning Man principles — radical self-expression, gifting, communal effort — but with a chilly twist. This is community first, set against Appalachia’s winter backdrop. Workshops, interactive art, theme camps, and fire circles take on a new kind of life when frost is part of the palette.
For nearly two decades, Frostburn has offered a place for Burners to gather, create, and warm the winter with imagination and connection.

Weather & What to Expect
Winter in West Virginia is unpredictable, but Frost Burn usually means:
❄️ Daytime highs near freezing
❄️ Night temperatures well below freezing
❄️ Snow, ice, wind — and surreal beauty
This means:
- Layering is key
- Hands, feet, and head warmth is essential
- Expect dramatic sunsets + long cold nights
Self-Reliance: Bring What You Need, Own Your Experience
Frostburn’s weather is wild, the winds are real, and you’re responsible for keeping yourself warm, fed, hydrated, and safe. That means bringing your own water, food, solid winter-ready shelter, proper cold-weather gear, and basic first aid supplies. Your comfort and safety—before, during, and after the event—are in your hands.
We’re all in this together, so do your part to help the community thrive:
-
Follow all laws and campground rules.
-
Treat everyone with respect and practice enthusiastic consent.
-
Live the Ten Principles—they’re what make this event what it is.
Winter Camping: The Fun Part Starts With Being Prepared!
Camping at Frost Burn isn’t your average summer weekend in the woods—winter camping is a whole different adventure, and it takes way more preparation. The good news? With the right gear, it’s incredibly rewarding (and honestly kind of epic).
Pack More Warmth Than You Think You Need
Layers are life. Bring extra blankets, clothing, SOCKS (so many socks), gloves, and anything else that keeps you toasty. Winter has a special talent for making your gear damp, muddy, misplaced, or mysteriously unusable—backup items are your best friends.
Sleep Setup: Your Nighttime Survival Kit
A solid winter sleep system is essential.
-
Use an insulated sleeping pad or winter-rated mat.
-
Choose a sleeping bag that’s rated well below freezing—adding a second lighter bag or a pile of blankets can boost warmth.
-
Consider slipping a blanket or tarp underneath your bedding for extra heat retention.
Avoid inflatable air mattresses—they trap cold air underneath you and will chill you to the bone. Closed-cell foam pads or winter-specific insulated mats are the way to go.
A layer of mylar (like an emergency blanket) beneath your sleep setup can help reflect precious body heat back toward you.
Heat Sources: Know the Risks
Wood, oil, and propane heaters might sound cozy, but they carry serious dangers—fire hazards, carbon monoxide, oxygen depletion, and poor air quality.
Using these inside a closed tent or enclosed structure is extremely risky and only recommended with serious safety precautions.
If you plan to use any fuel-burning heat source indoors, you MUST:
-
Bring a combination smoke and carbon monoxide detector.
-
Mount it at the height where your head will be while you sleep.
-
Check it after freezing temperatures—batteries don’t love the cold.
-
-
Keep a 5 lb fire extinguisher nearby (within 3–6 feet), easy to grab even if you’re half asleep.
Do a Test Run!
Winter camping has a learning curve, and everyone’s setup is a little different. Try spending a night outside in cold or bad weather before the event. It’s the best way to find out what works, what doesn’t, and how many layers make you feel like both a burrito and a superhero.
Tips for Staying Warm (a.k.a. How to Keep Your Butt From Freezing at Frostburn)
Winter in West Virginia likes to keep us on our toes. Up on the mountain, weather can flip from sunshine to snowstorm to mud-river to “is it really 50 degrees right now?” all in one weekend. Nights are usually below freezing, so being ready for anything is part of the adventure.
Some camps use parked cars to help block the wind, but remember: no vehicle is allowed to idle for more than two minutes. We love warmth, but we also love clean air and quiet nights.
Choose the Right Clothing (Seriously, Cotton Is Not Your Friend)
This is one of the most important rules: cotton holds water, and wet cotton steals your body heat fast. Stick to wool, silk, and synthetic materials whenever possible. You can find great pieces at outdoor stores—or score treasure at your local thrift shop.

Imagine:
🔥 Custom faux fur coats that keep you warm by campfires
🧣 Plush hooded jackets that shift from day motions to nighttime light shows
🎩 Faux fur vests that are cozy over thermals but still bold in moonlight
Think layers:
- Base thermal layer
- Mid flannel/fleece
- Fashion-forward faux fur outer layer
- Warm accessories- hats, scarves, warm gloves.
Events like Frost Burn value creativity and personal expression. Choose gear that keeps you warm and helps you feel like your best self.

Here’s what keeps you warmest:
- Waterproof outer layers — and extras, because weather happens.
- Insulated boots (tall ones are awesome when the mud gets dramatic).
- Snow pants or ski gear.
- A high quality faux fur coat- for both style & necessity
- Hats that actually cover your ears.
- Gloves + glove liners for bonus warmth.
- Soft scarves, balaclavas, dickies, or anything that shields your neck and face.
- Earmuffs for maximum cozy.
Layer Like a Pro
You’ll be bouncing between outdoor chill and warm indoor spaces, so be prepared to add and remove layers often. Adjusting your clothing as you move around keeps you comfortable and prevents sweating—which is a fast track to getting cold later.
Extra base layers (tank tops, leggings, thermals) and plenty of socks are worth every inch of pack space. When something gets damp, switch it out immediately.
Stay Hydrated & Don’t Ignore Biology
Hot tip: being hydrated helps your body stay warm.
Weird-but-true tip: a full bladder actually makes you colder.
So drink water, refill often, and absolutely pee before bed. You will thank yourself.
Bring the Fun With You
Costumes are joy multipliers! Think glitter-free, feather-free, but full of expression. Faux fur is a crowd favorite, and bright, vibrant winter accessories brighten even the grayest day. Winter layering actually makes for some outrageous outfit combos—lean into it.
Light it Up!
Nights at Frost Burn are dark, magical, and the perfect excuse to glow like a winter nebula. LED fashion is absolutely the way to go—both for safety and for pure sparkle-powered fun. Think glowing LED faux fur coats, hats, lit-up scarves, glowing flow toys, or anything that makes you stand out in the night. The more you shimmer, the easier you are to spot (and the more fabulous you look doing it).
Warm Up by Volunteering
Want a guaranteed way to stay warm AND be part of the magic? Become a Ranger! After a training session, you’ll stay toasty by moving around the event, checking in with folks, and helping the community. Rangers are beloved for good reason—they help make the event safer, kinder, and more connected.
Furrocious Furr Coats aka Cuddle Coats
Share the Warmth, Share the Love
Theme camps often host heated spaces—pop in, warm up, enjoy the vibe, but be mindful of space and flow. Campfires are everywhere, waiting for friendly faces and good stories.
Keep an eye out for solo Burners, too. Offer a warm drink, a place by the fire, or even gift them one of those extra scarves or pairs of gloves you brought “just in case.” Helping another Frost Burner stay warm is one of the fastest ways to heat up your heart.
Community Vibes + Activities
Expect open-mic storytelling, fire spinning, light art installations, and intimate community spaces. The cold becomes part of the story — toasted marshmallows aren’t just sweet, they’re essential.
Final Tips
✔ Water-resistant outer layers
✔ A hood or headpiece that blocks wind
✔ Multiple layers for changing temps
✔ Warm beverages around late-night fire circles

All in ALL
Whether you’re a seasoned burner or a first-time snowy adventurer, Frost Burn WV is a beautiful collision of community and winter wonder. Dress smartly, layer creatively, and let the cold spark your imagination.
